By October of 2015, 67,000 immigrants from Afghanistan migrants had reached Germany. Many of them planned to eventually settle in Germany. Thomas de Maizière, the interior minister, said that applicants would be granted asylum on a case by case basis. Opponents argue that Germany has sacrificed enough for Afghanistan since it has had troops there for over 14 years and spent over 2 billion euros on development projects within the country. Proponents argue that after 35 years of war in Afghanistan, Germany has a duty to accept these refugees.
