I believe it to be a good idea, however it is unfeasable. Most nations would be very unwilling to give up their autonomy, and overall integrating all EU nations into one would be a very long, very complicated, and very difficult process.

The EU should become a more solid confederation, maybe along the Swiss style rather than the American.

Yes, with the EU only functioning as an Economic and Security entity and leaving domestic policies to member states. The functions of the EU should be free trade protections as well as defensive responses to attacks and the protection of greater European borders.

Currently the EU is not ready for such a transition. This could be an option in the future after the system has been adjusted
