Should Germany maintain a presence at the United Nations?

The UN. is an organization of governments founded in 1945 after World War II. The organization’s objectives include promoting peace and security, protecting human rights and the environment and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict. Recent U.N. interventions include the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009 and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. In 1955 West Germany was admitted into the UN. East Germany was admitted into the UN in as a non-voting observer in 1972. In 1990 the Federal Republic of Germany was formally recognized by the UN. Germany is the third largest financial contributor to the UN and contributes $140 million annually.

180 Elderly Haitians Slain in Voodoo Massacre

More than 180 people were killed in Haiti’s capital as a powerful warlord ordered the slaying of elderly slum residents he suspected of giving his son a severe illness through witchcraft, the United Nations and Haitian human-rights groups said Monday. Gang boss Monel Felix directed his followers to kill residents with guns, knives and machetes after he was advised by a voodoo priest that elderly people practicing sorcery had caused his son to be stricken with a fatal sickness, the National Human Rights Defense Network, a Haitian rights group, said in a report. The ill child died Saturday as Felix’s gang carried out the killings, the group said. The violence in Port-au-Prince over the weekend highlights the chaos that has engulfed Haiti, where a U.S.-backed, Kenyan-led multinational police force deployed earlier this year has struggled to fight back gangs that control most of the Caribbean nation’s capital.Warlords have ransacked everything from police stations to hospitals while the country’s fragile government has been mired in infighting. The World Food Program estimates that half of Haiti’s 12 million people face acute hunger.Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the U.N. secretary-general, said 127 of the 184 people killed in the latest attacks were elderly men and women. About 5,000 people have been killed by gang violence in Haiti in 2024, according to the U.N.Haiti’s interim Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé called the killings “a barbaric act of unbearable cruelty,” and pledged to deploy police against the gang. “A red line has been crossed, and the state will mobilize all its forces to track down and destroy these criminals,” Fils-Aimé said.With the government in disarray, police have faced mass desertions. Security analysts and U.N. officials say crime bosses like Felix have thrived in the power vacuum, gobbling up territory around Port-au-Prince’s main shipping and fuel terminals to facilitate their main businesses, which include extortion, kidnappings and drug and weapons smuggling. Rights organizations accuse gangs of rampant killings, rape and recruiting children as foot soldiers to assert their control over the city’s sprawling slums.

Israel Sinks Syria's Navy

Israel said Tuesday that it had destroyed Syria’s navy in overnight airstrikes, as it continued to pound targets in Syria despite warnings that its operations there could ignite new conflict and jeopardize the transition of power to an interim government.Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, said that the Israeli military had “destroyed Syria’s navy overnight, and with great success.” His remarks appeared to confirm Israel’s responsibility for the destruction documented in the Syrian port city of Latakia, where photos showed the smoldering remains of ships sunk at their dock.Mr. Katz said that Israel’s military “has been operating in Syria in recent days to hit and destroy strategic capabilities that pose a threat to Israel,” although he did not indicate what new or immediate risk Syria’s navy presented to Israel, which has the most powerful military in the Middle East.Israeli warplanes have conducted hundreds of strikes in Syria since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday, according to war monitors. Israel has characterized its operations as defensive, saying its military was striking suspected chemical weapons stockpiles in Syria to prevent them from falling “into the hands of extremists.”“From here, I warn the rebel leaders in Syria: Those who follow Assad’s path will end like Assad,” Mr. Katz said.As the Assad government fell to the rebels over the weekend, Israeli ground forces advanced beyond the demilitarized zone on the Israel-Syria border, marking their first overt entry into Syrian territory in more than 50 years. An Israeli military spokesman on Tuesday denied reports that the military was advancing on Damascus. The spokesman, Avichay Adraee, said the military was inside a buffer zone between Israel and Syria and at other points “in order to protect the Israeli border.”Earlier Tuesday, Geir Pedersen, the United Nations special envoy for Syria, called on Israel to halt its “very troubling” military operations there, and said de-escalation was needed. “We are continuing to see Israeli movements and bombardments into Syrian territory. This needs to stop,” Mr. Pedersen told reporters in Geneva.
